SCOPE – proposals must involve one of the following:
- Medical devices or in vitro diagnostic devices as defined by the Medical Device Regulations 2002.
- Digital health technologies that fall under Tier C of the NICE Evidence Standards Framework for Digital Health Technologies and are focused on patient outcomes and intended for ultimate use in the NHS or social care system.
- Non-regulated digital technologies will only be considered for real-world evaluations if they have a potential application as products in the NHS or social care systems.
- Artificial Intelligence regulated as a medical device.
PDA will support various activities, including the development of innovative technologies, preclinical and clinical trials, gathering evidence for regulatory approval, and conducting follow-up studies. A strong element of patient and public involvement and end user engagement is a prerequisite for PDA. Proposals must also set out a commercial strategy that takes into account the regulatory pathway, IP management, commercial barriers, health economics and route to market. A plan for future adoption of the technology into the NHS or social care system should be presented.
PROJECTS THAT WILL NOT BE FUNDED
- Early stage or fundamental research
- Projects that involve work on animals or animal tissue
- Minor or incremental changes to technologies or interventions in current clinical use
- Projects involving small molecule drugs, stem cells or cosmetic products
- Scale-up manufacture of the product needed to carry out a clinical evaluation
- Evaluation of a fully developed product, already adopted within the NHS or social care system
- Professional training, including PhD fees and stipends (costed time of the individual is allowed)
- Digital health technologies that fall under Tier A and Tier B of the NICE Evidence Standards Framework for Digital Health Technologies.
ELIGIBILITY
- The lead organisation must be a UK-based NHS or social care provider, SME, Higher Education Institute (including universities and research institutes) or not-for-profit organisation.
- Projects must be collaborative and involved at least two organisations.
FUNDING RATES
- No maximum funding
- Projects can be up to 36 months duration
- 100% of direct costs funded
