EC announces results of LIFE call for proposals 2023

The European Commission recently allocated more than 380 million euros in LIFE grants to 133 new projects in the field of environment and climate action. The awarded projects of the LIFE call 2023 span all areas of the LIFE programme. The deadline for new applications in 2025 has not yet been announced but is expected soon.

What is the LIFE grant about?

The LIFE grant (L’Instrument Financier pour l’Environnement) for the period 2021-2027 consists of four sub-programmes:

  • nature and biodiversity
  • circular economy and quality of life
  • climate mitigation and adaptation
  • clean energy transition.

Who can apply?

In principle, the LIFE programme is open to companies, knowledge institutions, government organisations and NGOs working on environmental and climate-related innovations in the EU. LIFE projects are often implemented by partnerships with several European partners.

LIFE criteria

For a successful LIFE application, your project must meet the following requirements:

  • There are one or more participating parties.
  • The participants are based in an EU Member State.
  • The innovation contributes to solving a natural, environmental or climate problem.
  • The project complies with EU objectives and regulations.

Results of the LIFE call 2023

LIFE projects play a critical role in advancing the goals of the European Green Deal, including achieving climate neutrality by 2050 and reversing biodiversity loss by 2030. This investment aims to create a lasting impact on Europe’s environment, economy, and citizens’ well-being. The awarded projects of the LIFE call 2023 span all areas of the LIFE programme, focusing on:

  • Nature and Biodiversity: close to 216 million euros, including 144.5 million euros from the EU, dedicated to restoring ecosystems and habitats and improving the conservation of various species.
  • Circular Economy and Quality of Life: 143 million euros in total, with 74 million euros from the EU, allocated to 26 projects tackling water conservation, waste reduction, pollution control, and promoting reuse and recycling.
  • Climate Resilience, Mitigation, and Governance: approximately 110 million euros, with nearly 62 million euros from the EU.
  • Clean Energy Transition: 105 million euros, of which 99 million euros comes from the EU, aimed at driving market solutions for sustainable energy.
