Paving the way for second-generation circular bioeconomy

The BIOSKOH Flagship project will pave the way for a Second Generation European Circular Bioeconomy. It will showcase how a number of innovation stepping stones can realise a breakthrough in techno-economic viability of lignocellulosic bio-refineries. The project will use a two stage investment process and development path to realise the largest second generation (2G) bio-refinery in Europe: 110 kton of 2G bioproducts per year.

Overview of the BIOSKOH project

In the BIOSKOH project, partners from the full value chain are represented: from land owners and feedstock producers to supply chain experts and agronomical research partners. They will set up a new biomass value chain that will exploit large amounts of currently unused crop residues (kton/year), and develop newly grown dedicated crops on marginal land (total circa 320 kton/year). This will revitalise the regional economy. An innovative integrated package of pre-treatment, hydrolyses and fermentation was developed by technology providers Biochemtex, Novozymes and Lesaffre. It was tested and demonstrated in the only available semi-industrial scale 2G biorefinery research plant (Crescentino). The innovative package has a higher yield and lower CAPEX. It will now be upscaled to the first-of-a-kind commercial scale flagship. This flagship will be operated by Energochemica.

Objectives of the project: showcase viability of lignocellulosic bio-refineries

The aim of the project is to showcase the techno-economic viability of the new solution, based on a sound business plan and four stepping stones: yield, biomass cost, brownfield and industrial symbiosis. Dedicated innovation actions will be performed by expert partners, including:

  • establishment of a vast second generation biomass supply chain and supply master plan
  • construction, starting up and operation of Europe’s largest 2G biorefinery
  • assessing the increased cascading potential through lignin valorisation and 2G bio-chemicals
  • life cycle analysis (LCA) and socio-economic impact analysis
  • business plan for a second investment round
  • exploitation, dissemination and replication actions to various bioeconomy clusters in Europe

This will give both a short-term and a long-term contribution to the European Industrial Renaissance and bioeconomy.

Our involvement in the BIOSKOH project

We have several responsibilities within the project. Our main task is to promote the further expansion of the BIOSKOH Biorefinery in stage 2 by EU chemical industry sites (brownfields) analysis and engagement. To do this, we provide services such as:

  • We define and plan innovation by performing a technology intelligence and market / stakeholder analysis.
  • We maximise the impact of innovation projects by performing market analysis and users’ requirements analysis, project coordination and compliance, and technology exploitation and valorisation.
